Pancreatic Cancer Trial: Early surgery boosts success rate

Speeding up access to surgery for pancreatic cancer patients diagnosed early enough increased success rates by a third, a pilot scheme has shown.

Pancreatic cancer 4 separate Diseases

Scientists who discovered that pancreatic cancer is at least four separate diseases say their findings could lead to improved treatments for the deadly illness.

They studied pancreatic cancer in 456 patients and identified four classes of genetic error that triggered tumors. They labeled the four cancers: squamous-type; pancreatic progenitor; immunogenic; and aberrantly differentiated endocrine exocrine, BBC News reported.

Canada-Israel Cancer Research Project Seeks Further Funding

A Canada-Israel cancer research collaboration needs further funding to support a second three-year stretch. "Pancreatic cancer devastates its victims," said Sylvia Soyka, who funded the initial project, "but in my experience, it stirs passion in the people close to them. Together we can use that passion to make a difference."

BRCA gene mutation - known for breast cancer connection - can also lead to pancreatic cancer

A new $1.25 million study funded by the Canadian Cancer Society could lead to the first personalized treatment for some people with pancreatic cancer, one of the most hard-to-treat forms of the disease. Dr Steven Gallinger, a surgical oncologist at the University Health Network and cancer researcher at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital, has received a new Impact Grant to study the link between BRCA mutations and pancreatic cancer.

Researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center have found that mice made obese by high-calorie, high-fat diets develop abnormally high numbers of lesions known to be precursors to pancreas cancer.

Researchers at Mayo Clinic have developed a promising method to distinguish between pancreatic cancer and chronic pancreatitis — two disorders that are difficult to tell apart. A molecular marker obtained from pancreatic "juices" can identify almost all cases of pancreatic cancer, their study shows.

Celery, artichokes, and herbs, especially Mexican oregano, all contain apigenin and luteolin, flavonoids that kill human pancreatic cancer cells in the lab by inhibiting an important enzyme, according to two new University of Illinois studies.

Sally Ride, first american in space dies

Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space, died Monday after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 61. Pancreatic cancer is most often associated with high profile male sufferers, such as Steve Jobs or Patrick Swayze, but it is actually the third deadliest cancer in women, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Can antioxidants prevent cancer, too?  

Most of us have heard that antioxidants can help lower the risk of a myriad of health problems such as heart disease, certain cancers, cataracts, macular degeneration and Alzheimer’s disease. Antioxidant nutrients – vitamins C and E, beta-carotene and selenium – are thought to inactivate free radicals, toxic byproducts of normal cell metabolism linked to many disease processes.

Pancreatic cancer: Trial drug MRK003 shows promise

Doctors want to improve the prognosis of this aggressive cancer. Scientists say they may have found a new weapon against pancreatic cancer after promising early trial results of an experimental drug combination. Giving the chemotherapy agent gemcitabine with an experimental drug called MRK003 sets off a chain of events that ultimately kills cancer cells, studies in mice show.

Folfirinox Delivers Benefit In Pancreatic Cancer

A new study conducted by researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester has shown that taking the full-strength aspirin could be linked to a 26 percent reduction in the risk of pancreatic cancer, while low-dose aspirin intake may reduce the risk by 35 percent.
